Today, I’m sharing all my sources and tips for finding and buying that perfect vintage rug online.
I’m talking about the authentic handcrafted rugs – not the look-a-like machine woven versions (although those are pretty cool, too.)
And you know that I’m all about the budget – so some of these sources are amazing for getting crazy good deals on your rugs!
Keep in mind; these rugs are pricey to begin with!
And rightly so – they are absolutely beautiful and hand knotted by skilled artisans. I have a hard time swallowing some of these prices because I’m so budget conscious sometimes.
However, you cannot deny the quality and feel of a REAL VINTAGE RUG.
These rugs are not only beautiful and functional, but they are fantastic for your decor.
Want a quick way to add instant character to your rooms? Plop down one of these authentic rugs.
It’s like …. magic. (name that movie…)
I forgot to mention the best part about this roundup …
You don’t even need to leave your house or change out of your pajamas.
tips for buying vintage Rugs online
- Start or end with the rug when decorating – it’s easier to pull together a room that way.
- To clean your vintage rug – ask the seller for their advice first. And know that you can vacuum the tops and bottoms of the rugs to keep them in good shape!
- Make sure your rug is the right size for the room. Here’s a great guide on the subject.
- Understand that your rug may not be perfect. Because these are handcrafted rugs, you will get some fading and imperfections in the design. But that’s part of the charm, in my opinion. A bit of wear on these rugs is normal and ok – too much wear is not.
- These rugs can last decades for you if you take care of them. And they are beautiful enough to be passed down to future generations.
How do I know I’m buying a Real Vintage Rug?
There are a few clues you can look for to ensure you are buying a real handcrafted rug.
The first clue is in the make and material.
Real, authentic vintage rugs will note “hand-knotted” or “handwoven” in the description. The materials used will generally be 100% hand-spun wool yarn.
If you buy a machine woven rug, typically it will say “machine-woven” and include some synthetic materials – such as polyester and polypropylene.
The trade-off? You get the look without the hefty price tag.
Since these materials are synthetic, you also don’t have to worry about shedding, as generally these materials don’t shed.
Another clue is the origin.
Oushak rugs generally come from Turkey.
Beni Ourain rugs are those super soft, geometric wool rugs from Morocco.
Persian rugs are typically from Iran.
And Kilim rugs are from several different regions. These rugs are flatwoven wool rugs with geometric designs.
But just like with most everything in life; there are high end Vintage Rugs and there are low end Vintage Rugs. The rug materials, color dyes and craftmanship all contribute to the final cost.
Finally, look at age. A real vintage rug will typically be older than 75 years. However, you can also get one older than 50 years and it’s just as beautiful.
Ultimately – whichever rug speaks to you is the right one for you.
And if you love it, than that’s all the matters.
You can feel pretty confident making a purchase from any of these shops below – as these are reputable, well-known companies.
Now you just need to decide your budget, your color scheme and style and the place!
