Horses glowing red, blue, green, and purple through a dark forest? Yep, this is real!

Michigan has a ranch that turns an ordinary trail ride into something that looks halfway between a parade and a dream.

The handmade lights wrap the horses in color as the group moves through the woods after sunset.

Even better, many of the horses are rescues or seniors, which gives the whole experience a sweeter side.

No expert riding background is required, either.

One minute you are on a normal trail. The next, your horse is glowing like it belongs in a music video.

Nightfall changes the ranch quickly once the glowing equipment comes on. Handcrafted glow tack turns each horse into a moving outline of color beneath the trees.

The current glow experience lasts 45 minutes and follows woodland trails on private ranch property. Rise & Ride Ranch keeps these rides calm and slow.

Every glow ride stays at a walk from beginning to end. That pace gives riders time to adjust to the darkness without adding speed to the experience.

The horses move through wooded sections while the lights remain visible from different points along the group. The effect becomes especially striking when darker stretches of forest surround the illuminated horses.

The experience is beginner friendly, although riders still control their own horses. Guides lead the group and give instructions for steering, stopping, and safe trail behavior.

Wooded setting covers about 40 acres and borders more than 800 acres of state game land. The ranch sits at 2855 36th Street in Allegan, about 30 minutes from Lake Michigan.

A Family Ranch With Heart

Rise & Ride Ranch grew from a family project launched in 2020. Two sisters and their husbands combined different skills to build the operation together.

Its current focus is private horseback experiences that help support daily horse care. Most horses in the herd are seniors, rehabilitation cases, or animals needing a safer landing place.

The ranch also operates a nonprofit program supporting retired and rehabilitating horses with additional care needs. Daily care can include specialized diets, medications, hoof work, bodywork, and veterinary monitoring.

Workloads are adjusted according to each horse’s comfort, age, health, and current condition. Walk-only trail rides keep expectations gentle for horses that remain comfortable carrying riders.

Rest days and careful rotation are also built into the herd’s schedule. Visitors should not expect a petting farm filled with unrelated animal attractions.

The facility now focuses specifically on outdoor horse experiences rather than general farm entertainment. That narrower approach keeps the visit centered on the horses and their individual needs.

The majority of the herd consists of seniors and rehabilitation horses from varied backgrounds. Each one has its own personality and backstory.

Age, health history, and suitable rider range still differ across the herd. Some came from demanding former jobs, while others needed recovery after difficult circumstances.

Several horses also require ongoing management for chronic conditions or old injuries. Rider assignments consider experience, size, balance, and the individual horse’s abilities.

The ranch deliberately sets carrying limits below what some horses could theoretically manage. Body care includes regular massage and chiropractic support when appropriate.

Those professionals currently visit monthly, while stretching and strengthening continue between appointments. Hooves are maintained on a regular schedule, with each horse’s movement considered during trimming.

Nutrition plans also vary because several horses have metabolic concerns or other dietary restrictions. The horses are not treated as interchangeable trail mounts.

Their workloads can change when comfort, mobility, health, or recovery needs change. That approach matters during glow rides because the experience is designed around easy movement.

The result is a nighttime attraction built around horses already suited to calm, walk-only work.

The glowing equipment is one of the ranch’s most distinctive features. Current ride information confirms that the glow tack is handcrafted specifically for these nighttime experiences.

The gear creates the colored outline that makes the horses visible against the darker woodland background. The ranch does not publish detailed construction specifications for every component of the current setup.

That makes older technical claims about voltage, materials, or exact lighting systems difficult to verify. The safest description is also the simplest: the tack is custom and handmade.

Night rides have stricter weather limitations than daytime rides. The handcrafted glow tack cannot be used in rain.

A glow ride may therefore be canceled when rain is expected during the scheduled time. Weather decisions depend on actual ranch and trail conditions rather than forecasts alone.

Day rides can continue through many light-rain or snowy conditions. Night riders should expect more weather sensitivity because the illuminated equipment adds another limitation.

The visual effect remains central, but horse comfort and trail conditions still determine whether rides proceed.

Safety Rules For Night Riders

No previous horseback experience is required for the glow ride. Riders must be at least eight years old.

There is a weight limit of 250 pounds. Some weight ranges also have height requirements.

Riders between 151 and 200 pounds must be at least five feet tall. Those between 201 and 250 pounds must be at least five feet three inches tall.

The ranch checks rider height and weight during the arrival process. Every participant must understand instructions without relying on another person to translate during the ride.

Riders also need to steer and stop their horses independently when directed. All glow rides stay at a walk.

Trotting, cantering, and galloping are not permitted during these nighttime experiences. Helmets meeting ASTM and SEI standards are strongly recommended for all riders.

The ranch has certified helmets available in several sizes when needed. Public glow riders should arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled start.

That time is used for check-in and the required weigh-in before the group leaves. Late arrivals can miss public rides because the group cannot delay its scheduled departure.

Nighttime riding is only one part of the current schedule. Private trail rides run through the woods and open grassy areas.

You can choose a half-hour or a full hour on the trail. Some routes also circle the ranch’s pond.

These daytime rides are also walk-only and can accommodate beginners. Private groups currently include up to eight riders.

Children as young as two can participate under specific age and assistance rules. Meet and Greets give visitors another way to spend time with the horses without taking a trail ride.

Guests can brush the horses, hand out treats, lead one around, or choose a short hand-led ride. These 30-minute sessions have no age minimum.

In fall, Trick or Treat Trails come with festive decorations along the path. The 2026 event runs on selected October weekends.

Those 40-minute rides use decorated horses and wooded trails, with a treat afterward. Winter brings Holly Jolly Horseback Rides with cheerful holiday touches.

The December 2026 dates remain unannounced. Holiday rides also stay at a walk and use decorated horses and trails. Birthday parties are no longer part of the ranch’s current offerings.

Booking Your Glow Ride

Glow rides require advance online reservations. Drop-in visits are not accepted at this private family ranch.

A Public Glow Ride puts you in a mixed group with other riders. There is no booking minimum, so it suits solo riders and couples.

Families and small friend groups can also reserve available spaces. The maximum glow group size is eight riders.

The ranch usually releases dates about one month at a time. It does not maintain a waitlist for these rides.

Cancellations or newly opened spaces may be announced through social media updates. Current availability is shown through the online booking calendar.

The old large-private-glow option is not listed among the current 2026 offerings. Visitors should therefore base plans on the public glow format now being advertised.

The ranch limits access to scheduled experiences rather than keeping regular public visiting hours. Booking ahead is essential during holidays, tourist periods, and limited seasonal events.

Public glow riders should plan to arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled departure.

Every Season Glows Differently

The ranch operates horseback experiences throughout Michigan’s four seasons. Private trail rides use the same woodland property as conditions change throughout the year.

Winter can bring snow, while spring may bring wetter trail conditions. Summer fills the woods with leaves, and fall changes the surrounding canopy.

Glow rides can look different because light reflects differently across snow, water, and foliage. Weather still determines whether a particular nighttime ride can operate safely.

Rain is especially important because the handmade glow tack cannot be used while wet. Daytime trail rides have more flexibility during light rain and snow.

Seasonal events also change the experience without changing the ranch’s walk-only approach. October adds decorated Halloween rides on selected weekends.

December brings a holiday version with decorated horses and woodland trails. The ranch’s location also makes a combined West Michigan trip practical.

The setting changes with the calendar, but the core experience stays simple. It is still a quiet ride through the woods with horses carrying a very unusual glow.
