12 California Hospitals That Earned Major Recognition From U.S. News In 2026
In 1888, a group of 50 women decided their growing town needed a hospital, so they built one. That hospital is still caring for patients in California today, and it shows up on this list.
I love that kind of origin story. Another spot on this list has stood on ocean bluffs since 1952, and one cancer center spreads across more than 100 acres of gardens.
Hospital rankings can feel like a dry stack of numbers. Still, I can’t help being curious about what helps a hospital stand out when U.S. News picks its best.
Some of these places earned spots on the national Honor Roll, while others shine in specific kinds of care.
The hospitals on this list have earned recognition for different reasons, and their stories offer a closer look at what makes each one stand out.
1. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
Eleven years in a row on the U.S. News Honor Roll is the hospital version of a winning streak.
Cedars-Sinai extended that run with the Best Hospitals 2026-27 rankings.
The numbers behind the name are hefty. You’ll find 886 licensed beds, about 2,100 physicians, and around 2,800 nurses here.
That makes it one of the largest nonprofit academic medical centers in the country. Thousands of other health care workers and staff keep the place running.
So where does it really shine? Three specialties landed in the national top five for 2026-27.
Those are Gastroenterology and GI Surgery, Cardiology, Heart and Vascular Surgery, and Orthopedics. That’s your stomach, your heart, and your joints, all in excellent hands.
In total, the hospital earned national rankings in 10 specialties. The list also includes Cancer, Geriatrics, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Urology, and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Pulmonology and Lung Surgery made the cut too, along with Diabetes and Endocrinology. That’s a long list for one campus on Beverly Boulevard.
Care runs from routine primary visits to treatment for complex illnesses. The medical center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
A tip worth remembering: appointments are recommended for many services here. Calling ahead saves you from wandering the halls looking confused.
For a hospital in the heart of Los Angeles, that steady Honor Roll streak says plenty. It’s a name many Californians already know for good reason.
Address: 8700 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90048
2. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center
Every patient room in this building can turn into an intensive care unit. That flexibility was built right into the design when it opened in 2008.
Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center first got its start in 1955. Its current home is a 10-story structure planned around natural light and open spaces.
The idea is simple. Brighter rooms and open areas are meant to support wellness and healing.
Earthquakes were on the planners’ minds too. It was one of the first total replacement hospitals built to the latest California seismic safety rules.
Now for the rankings. UCLA Health has held U.S. News recognition among the nation’s best hospitals for more than 30 years.
Back in the 2023-24 rankings, the medical center tied for No. 1 in California. That’s a long track record, not a one-year fluke.
Inside, you’ll find 520 beds and a Level 1 trauma center. The trauma area includes multiple trauma rooms and its own dedicated CT scanner.
Expecting a little one? The BirthPlace, Westwood operates here as part of the medical center.
The campus also includes UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. The Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA is part of the picture as well.
Students learn here too, since it serves as the main teaching hospital for the David Geffen School of Medicine. Surgical suites even feature full audiovisual integration.
Address: 757 Westwood Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90095
3. Stanford Hospital
Doubling your capacity is a big move for any hospital. Stanford did exactly that when it opened its new Stanford Hospital building.
The facility blends advanced medical technology with a human-centered approach to care. Its stated goal is to predict, prevent, and cure illness more precisely.
Stanford has a long habit of showing up in U.S. News rankings. It placed in the top 20 of the National Honor Roll for 2024-25.
The year before, it earned an Honor Roll spot for the ninth straight year. It also ranked No. 1 in the San Jose metro area.
The specialty results were wide too. For 2023-24, it was nationally ranked in 11 of 15 adult specialties.
It also rated high performing in 19 of 21 procedures and conditions that year. That’s a near-perfect attendance record for excellence.
Part of the secret is the setting. As a major teaching hospital, it’s known for pairing innovative research with world-renowned experts.
New discoveries move faster from the lab to the patient in a place like this. The hospital itself says the new building speeds up that journey.
The hospital stays open 24 hours a day. For Bay Area families, that’s a comforting thing to have nearby.
Living in Silicon Valley means tech is everywhere you look. Here, that same spirit of innovation shows up in patient care.

4. UCSF Medical Center
Your brain is in very good company in San Francisco. UCSF Medical Center was named the best in California and the West for neurology and neurosurgery in 2023-24.
Rheumatology earned that same top spot. That’s the field that treats autoimmune conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
The hospital landed on the U.S. News Honor Roll for adult care that year. Only 22 medical centers in the nation made it, and just five in California.
In the 2026–27 rankings, UCSF Medical Center placed 10 specialties in the national top 10, including geriatrics and pulmonology and lung surgery at No. 1.
The other top 10 areas were cancer, psychiatry, pulmonology and lung surgery, and ophthalmology. Rheumatology and neurology rounded out the group.
One stat really stands out. It was the only hospital in Northern California ranked in the top 50 for all 14 specialty areas reviewed.
The momentum carried forward. UCSF stayed among the top 20 hospitals in the nation for 2024-25.
The main Parnassus campus has about 600 beds. It’s known as the top-ranked hospital in the San Francisco metro area.
UCSF Health also runs clinics and outpatient centers across the region. It’s part of the University of California, San Francisco, a leader in health sciences research.
Heart care, diabetes care, and ear, nose, and throat care also earn recognition here. Psychology services sit on that list too.
Address: 505 Parnassus Ave, San Francisco, CA 94143
5. UC Davis Medical Center
UC Davis Medical Center was ranked the No. 1 hospital in Sacramento for at least the 15th consecutive year in the 2026–27 U.S. News & World Report rankings.
For 2024-25, U.S. News also placed it No. 8 in California. It has held a top 10 spot in the state for over a decade.
Emergencies get special attention here. It’s the only Level I Trauma Center in inland Northern California for both adults and kids.
That matters a lot if you live in the Central Valley or foothills. Serious injuries need the highest level of trauma care, fast.
Cancer care is another big deal. The hospital is home to the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Curious about research? The UC Davis MIND Institute studies neurodevelopmental disabilities, and it’s based right here.
Specialists and researchers cover more than 150 areas of health care. Primary care for all ages is offered too.
With 646 licensed beds, this is a big operation. It’s part of UC Davis Health, a major academic health center.
The recognition doesn’t stop with U.S. News. Healthgrades named it one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for 2026.
Appointments are recommended for many services, so plan ahead. The campus itself stays open 24 hours, every day of the week.
Address: 4301 X St, Sacramento, CA 95817
6. Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla
A hospital that opened in 1924 has seen a century of San Diego history. Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla has served the greater San Diego area ever since.
Today, its specialty care is nationally recognized. The campus sits just off I-5 on Genesee Avenue, so it’s easy to reach.
Big emergencies head to the Barbey Family Emergency and Trauma Center. It’s a Level I trauma center, the highest level of trauma care.
Heart patients have their own landmark here. The Prebys Cardiovascular Institute is part of the campus.
Heart surgery, cancer care, and orthopedic surgery are among the services offered. There’s also a Comprehensive Stroke Center for fast stroke treatment.
Growing families get attention too. Maternity care comes with a Level III NICU for babies who need extra help.
The campus holds more than just the main hospital. You’ll find the John R. Anderson V Medical Pavilion at Scripps Clinic and the Scripps/XiMED Medical Center.
The HM Poole Building rounds out the group. That’s a lot of names to remember, so check your appointment details before you go.
Visiting a loved one? Visiting hours run from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Valet and paid parking are available in several spots. The hospital itself is open 24 hours a day.
Address: 9888 Genesee Ave, La Jolla, CA 92037
7. Jacobs Medical Center at UC San Diego Health
No. 1 in California is about as good as it gets. UC San Diego Health earned that spot in the U.S. News 2026-27 rankings.
It also made the National Honor Roll and ranked No. 1 in San Diego. That’s a clean sweep of bragging rights.
Jacobs Medical Center is a key part of that success. It sits on Campus Point Drive as part of the region’s only academic medical center.
The rankings history is impressive too. For 2024-25, UC San Diego Health was nationally recognized in 11 specialties.
Pulmonology and Lung Surgery led the way at No. 10 in the nation. Obstetrics and Gynecology followed at No. 12.
It also rated high performing in 18 common procedures and conditions that year. On top of that, it held the No. 1 spot in San Diego for the fifth year in a row.
Green building fans, take note. Jacobs Medical Center earned LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Heart care has a home nearby at the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center. Its entrance stays open even during ongoing construction on the campus.
Speaking of construction, give yourself extra time for appointments. Valet at Thornton Loop now serves both Jacobs and the Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion.
Visiting hours run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Patient care continues around the clock.
Newsweek also ranked Jacobs No. 5 in its Best-in-State list for 2025. Clearly, the awards shelf here is getting crowded.

8. Hoag Hospital – Newport Beach
Ocean bluffs are a pretty great spot for a hospital. Hoag has stood on the bluffs of Newport Beach since 1952.
Its full official name is Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. That’s a mouthful, which is why you’ll usually see just Hoag.
It’s a nonprofit, acute care hospital on California’s Orange County coastline. You’ll find it right between Los Angeles and San Diego.
What sets it apart is its lineup of specialty institutes. Each one focuses on a specific area of care.
Cancer and digestive health each have their own institute. So do spine care and heart and vascular care.
Neurosciences and women’s health are covered as well. That’s a wide range for one coastal campus.
Bones and joints get special attention through an affiliate. Hoag Orthopedic Institute handles orthopedic care as part of the Hoag family.
Physicians lead patient care here. Highly skilled nurses and a large support staff back them up.
The hospital calls itself a beacon of exceptional health care. With its spot high on the bluffs, the comparison feels almost literal.
An information desk can point you in the right direction once you arrive. Parking options include a free lot and paid lots, so you have choices.
Newport Beach is famous for boats, beaches, and sunny days. Having a respected nonprofit hospital in town adds real peace of mind.
For more than 70 years, this hospital has been part of the community’s story. That kind of staying power doesn’t happen by accident.
Address: 1 Hoag Dr, Newport Beach, CA 92663
9. City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center – Duarte
Gardens and cancer care might seem like an odd pairing. At City of Hope, they share more than 100 acres in Duarte.
The main campus sits just northeast of Los Angeles. Lush gardens and open spaces surround its medical, education, and research buildings.
It’s an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center. That title comes from the National Cancer Institute and marks a top tier of cancer programs.
Science and patient care work side by side here. The campus is built to bridge new research with compassionate treatment.
Care covers the full journey. Patients get support from prevention through survivorship.
The hospital uses a wide array of advanced technologies, treatments, and services. Its expertise also covers rarer conditions, such as HIV- and AIDS-related lymphoma.
Heading there for the first time? The Visitor Center on East Duarte Road is a smart first stop.
It’s open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. A gender-neutral restroom is available as well.
Some campuses feel like a maze of parking structures. This one leans on green space, which can make a stressful day feel calmer.
The center calls itself home to many of the nation’s leading cancer doctors. For Southern California families facing a diagnosis, that’s a big deal.
Duarte is a small city in the San Gabriel Valley. Yet this campus draws attention from far beyond its borders.
Address: Visitor Center, 1500 E Duarte Rd, Duarte, CA 91010
10. Keck Hospital of USC
Back pain can make simple things feel like a workout. Keck Hospital of USC offers a dedicated spine clinic to help.
The Keck Medicine of USC Los Angeles Spine Clinic works with patients who have neck, back, and spine-related symptoms. Evaluation is the first step.
From there, the team builds a care plan around you. No two spines are the same, so plans are individualized.
Surgery isn’t automatically the answer. Plans may include conservative treatments, rehabilitation, or a surgical consultation when needed.
The goal is clear. Care aims to support better mobility and pain management.
The hospital is part of Keck Medicine of USC. That ties it to the University of Southern California and its medical school.
It sits on San Pablo Street on the east side of Los Angeles. The area around it is home to several USC health facilities.
Inpatient and specialized care are both part of the picture here. The campus is open 24 hours a day, every day.
Parking choices include a paid garage and paid lots. Some free lot parking is listed too.
Why include it on a list like this? Keck Hospital of USC is a familiar name among academic hospitals in Southern California.
Academic hospitals combine patient care with teaching and research. That mix often brings newer treatment options to patients sooner.
If your spine has been sending you complaints lately, this is a place worth knowing.
Address: 1500 San Pablo St, Los Angeles, CA 90033
11. UCI Health – Orange
Orange County has plenty of hospitals, but only one academic health system. That title belongs to UCI Health.
Its main hospital campus sits in the city of Orange on The City Drive South. Care continues around the clock, seven days a week.
So what does academic actually mean here? Doctors treat patients while also teaching students and doing research.
UCI Health describes its team as nationally regarded physicians and nurses. Researchers, clinicians, educators, and students work alongside them.
They share one stated mission. The aim is to improve the lives of people in the community and beyond.
Evidence-based care is another focus. That means treatments are guided by solid research rather than guesswork.
The name ties back to the University of California, Irvine. Even though the campus is in Orange, it carries the UCI brand.
For families in Orange County, having an academic medical center close by is a big plus. Complex conditions often call for that kind of expertise.
Parking options include a free lot and paid lots. Paid street parking is also nearby.
The campus sits near major freeways in central Orange County. That makes it reachable from many parts of the region.
Students training here today may become the doctors caring for you tomorrow. That’s a pretty neat cycle to think about.
Address: 101 The City Dr S, Orange, CA 92868
12. Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital
Fifty determined women started this story back in 1888. They wanted a hospital for the growing Santa Barbara community, and they made it happen.
That hospital became Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Today it’s a 519-bed acute care teaching hospital and trauma center.
It’s also the largest of its kind between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. That’s a long stretch of California coastline to cover.
The yearly numbers are eye-opening. The hospital admits more than 20,000 patients each year.
The emergency department sees nearly 73,000 visits annually. Around 2,400 babies are born here every year, too.
Do the math, and that’s more than six births a day on average. Somebody is always having a big day at Cottage.
Breadth is what this hospital is known for. Services span a wide range, from trauma care to childbirth.
As a teaching hospital, it also helps train future medical professionals. That keeps fresh energy flowing through the halls.
The hospital welcomes the LGBTQ+ community and is listed as a transgender safe space. Inclusive care matters, and it’s good to see it stated.
Parking is easier than you might expect. Free garage, lot, and street options are all available.
Those founders from 1888 probably couldn’t have pictured today’s busy medical campus. Their idea has grown into something huge.
