Three lakes, swans, brick walkways, and a fountain with its own four-foot waterfall are not what I usually picture when somebody says “college campus.”

Then I learned the entire place is officially a botanical garden.

The North Carolina university made that designation in 2004, and the landscaping has only become a bigger part of campus life since then.

Now The Princeton Review ranks the school No. 8 for happiest students and No. 9 for most beautiful campus, which makes me wonder how much the surroundings play into everyday life here.

The recognition does not stop with the scenery either, since the school also earns attention for its food, housing, and sustainability efforts.

I’m still trying to imagine studying for finals while ducks and swans drift past outside.

Some campuses give students a quad.

This one seems to have built an entire mood.

Bragging rights just arrived in a big way. Elon University earned the #8 spot for Happiest Students in The Princeton Review’s 2027 edition of The Best 392 Colleges.

That same guide named it the #9 Most Beautiful Campus in the country. Landing in both top-ten lists at once is a pretty rare double win.

The good news keeps stacking up. The Princeton Review also ranked Elon’s dorms #6 and its campus food #11.

Students apparently sleep well and eat well, which explains a lot about that happiness score.

Elon even placed #25 on the Green Matters list for caring about conservation. So the beauty isn’t just for show.

There’s real effort behind it.

In U.S. News & World Report’s 2027 rankings, Elon placed No. 4 for study abroad and No. 1 for learning communities.

That tells you students get chances to explore far beyond this North Carolina campus. Happy people tend to have interesting things to do.

Rankings can feel like dry numbers sometimes. These ones, though, paint a clear picture of daily life here.

Good food, comfy rooms, pretty walks, and plenty of adventures sound like a solid recipe for smiling. Honestly, it’s hard to argue with that kind of report card.

Most schools plant a few trees and call it a day. Elon took things much further, officially designating its entire campus a botanical garden in November 2004.

The residential campus stretches across about 700 acres. That’s a lot of room for lush lawns, diverse trees, and plenty of wildlife.

Walking to class here can feel like a nature tour. Open green spaces and flowering plants pop up around nearly every corner.

Some people compare the look to a country club, and that comparison makes sense.

The beauty comes from a long-term plan, not luck. In 1975, Wayne McBride proposed a campus master plan full of green vistas, plazas, fountains, and walkable paths.

That vision still shapes how everything looks today.

Here’s a smart tip for visitors. Spring and fall are lovely times to see the plants at their most colorful.

Bring comfortable shoes because you’ll want to wander.

Elon University has picked up beauty honors from several sources over the years. The student housing platform uhomes also placed Elon at No. 15 on its list of the 20 most beautiful college campuses in the United States.

Swans on a college campus? Yes, really, and they’ve got company.

Elon has three lakes, including Lake Mary Nell and Lake Verona. Students can spot ducks, turtles, and swans going about their busy animal lives.

Water changes the whole mood of a place. A quick stroll by a lake can turn a stressful day into a calmer one.

It’s a simple break that doesn’t cost anything.

The lakes also add to the campus’s peaceful, serene feeling. Trees and walkways frame the water, giving you lots of good angles for photos.

Your camera roll may fill up faster than expected.

If you visit, take a slow loop around the shoreline. Watch for turtles sunning themselves or ducks paddling by.

Please don’t feed the wildlife, though, since that can hurt them.

For students, these spots become favorite places to think, chat, or just breathe. Honestly, finding a pond buddy who happens to be a swan is a pretty great college perk.

It beats staring at a wall during a study break. Nature may be the most underrated part of that happiness ranking.

Computer-programmed water jets sound like something from a theme park. At Elon, they’re just part of the scenery.

The Chandler Fountain sits at the Koury Business Center. It has three levels, a 4-foot waterfall, and jets that create different water displays.

Then there’s the Alamance Fountain, another favorite landmark. Fountains like these show up across campus, adding sound and sparkle to the brick plazas.

They make even a short walk feel a bit fancy.

The gentle rush of water has a calming effect. It gives students a natural spot to meet friends, read, or rest between classes.

Plenty of graduation photos likely end up here too.

These fountains weren’t added randomly. They tie back to the 1975 master plan that called for plazas and fountains across campus.

Decades later, that idea still feels fresh.

Visitors should plan a stop at both fountains. Try going on a sunny day, when light catches the spray.

Sit nearby for a few minutes and just listen. You’ll quickly understand why Elon University keeps landing on lists of the most beautiful schools in North Carolina and beyond.

Founded in 1889, Elon has had plenty of time to build its character. The oldest building on campus, West Hall, opened in 1905.

West Hall sits in the Historic Neighborhood, the oldest part of campus. It serves as the backdrop for Commencement and Opening Convocation, so students see it at the start and end of their journey.

That’s a sweet tradition. You begin college in front of a historic building and graduate in front of it too.

The campus also has a story of comeback. The current Alamance Building stands where an earlier administration building was lost to a fire in 1923.

The school rebuilt and kept moving forward.

Look closely at the architecture as you walk. Elon uses a consistent collegiate Georgian style with burgundy brick and custom-made clay pavers.

Everything matches, which gives the campus a neat, polished look.

New buildings follow the same style, so old and new blend together nicely. It’s like the whole campus agreed on one great outfit.

Fans of history and design will find lots to admire here, from rooflines to brick paths underfoot.

Cramped, stuffy rooms are the classic college nightmare. Elon flipped that script, and The Princeton Review ranked its dorms #6 in 2027.

Every residential room has air conditioning and Wi-Fi. Rooms come furnished with beds, desks, and dressers or wardrobes, so move-in day gets a little easier.

Housing is grouped into neighborhoods with their own personalities. The Historic Neighborhood houses about 700 first-year students.

The Global Neighborhood opened in phases during 2013 and 2014, eventually bringing together five residence halls and the Global Commons building.

The Global Neighborhood accommodates approximately 600 students across five residence halls, each with a house identity inspired by a different world river, including the Orinoco, Yukon, Thames, Zambezi, and Tigris.

Green design shows up here too. The Global Neighborhood buildings are LEED Silver certified.

The Colonnades buildings are LEED Gold and use geothermal heating and cooling.

Here’s helpful advice for future students. Learn about each neighborhood before choosing housing, since the vibe changes from place to place.

Living and learning communities can help you meet people fast. A good home base really can make the whole college experience happier.

College food gets a bad reputation, but Elon seems determined to change that. The Princeton Review ranked its campus dining #11 for Best Campus Food in 2027.

Niche also placed Elon at #40 for Best College Food in America. Two separate rankings agreeing is a pretty tasty sign.

McEwen Dining Hall is known for strong meals. It’s also LEED Silver certified, so the building is as thoughtful as the plates.

That’s a nice combo for eco-minded eaters.

Clohan Dining Hall brings convenience to the table. It has a shopping market attached, which helps when you need snacks for a late study night.

Nobody wants to hunt for supplies at midnight.

Dining services also cater to different diets. Vegan and allergy-friendly options are available, which matters a lot for students with special needs.

Then there’s College Coffee, a weekly campus tradition. Students and staff gather for coffee and pastries and simply hang out.

It’s a small ritual that builds big community. Good food and good company might be the secret ingredients behind Elon University’s happy students.

Thirty-four LEED certifications is a seriously impressive number. Elon has 6 Platinum, 11 Gold, and 17 Silver ratings across campus.

Elon formalized its green building standards with a policy in 2009 that requires LEED certification for new construction and major renovations involving at least 8,000 square feet of conditioned, occupied space.

Lindner Hall was the first building to reach LEED Gold. Its roof features solar panels and a solar water heating system that make part of its own energy.

Founders Hall and Innovation Hall also earned LEED Gold.

Nature gets protected here too. The 56-acre Elon University Forest serves as a land preserve for scientific research.

Students can study real ecosystems without leaving campus.

Loy Farm is another standout. It’s a center for environmental research and sustainability, and it even houses a solar farm.

That’s a classroom with sunshine built in.

For anyone who cares about the planet, these details matter. They show the beauty here is planned with the future in mind.

Ask about sustainability programs if you visit. You may discover that green in North Carolina means more than just pretty lawns at this school.

Hammock poles might be the most relaxing campus feature ever invented. Elon has them, along with two beach volleyball courts and a frisbee golf course.

There’s also an outdoor concrete basketball court for pickup games. Fresh air and friendly competition are never far away.

Indoors, the Koury Athletic Center is the largest campus recreation facility. It has a fitness center, basketball and racquetball courts, a Pilates studio, fitness class rooms, and a pool.

Skipping workouts gets tricky with all that nearby.

Clubs keep the fun going after class. Elon offers between 250 and 300 student organizations, so most interests have a home.

The Moseley Center, called the heart of campus, houses many of these groups.

Traditions add extra sparkle. The Festival of Holiday Lights brings glowing luminaries, and Homecoming fills the calendar each year.
