Pura Diffuser Review – Is It worth the Hype?

Have you heard of Pura yet? Think Glade plug-in, but techier with better scents. Whether you have or haven’t heard of them, I’m here to share all about Pura in this Pura Diffuser Review post.
If you are new to Pura – be sure to read the whole review to get a good understanding if this is the right home fragrance system for you.
Pura 4 and Pura Car – My Latest Review
Since I first came out with this review, Pura has upgraded their offerings. Pura has a new device, called

I upgraded to Pura 4 and have been running it for a few weeks now. There are definitely some differences. Right off the bat, it seems like the Pura 4 is a little more compact than the previous version. It still looks fairly similar — just slightly smaller, in my opinion.

Fragrances automatically load to app
The fragrance vials are now “smart vials”, so you don’t have to scan the QR code on the back to upload your fragrances into the app.

When you insert the fragrance vials, Pura will pick up the fragrances automatically. One less step and definitely more convenient.
Fragrances last longer
All fragrances now come with “Puralast™.” What is Puralast™? According to the Pura website;
“Puralast™ technology allows your Pura to diffuse each fragrance differently, optimizing your scenting experience. With new smart vials, Puralast uses fragrance-specific data, accounting for the size of the room and your desired intensity, to intelligently scent your space for up to 120 hours.”
Pura Website
How does it do this? It learns your scent preferences by prompting you to leave feedback within the app. Think of it as a smart scent, constantly learning and tweaking based on how you interact with it within the app. This makes the scents more efficient and last longer.

If you have the old model, this new feature still works with the latest update! Just make sure you are using the new Smart Vial fragrances. You will know it’s a smart vial fragrance because it has a chip on the bottom. Eventually, all of their fragrances will be smart vials. After testing this for a few weeks, I can definitely say the scents last longer.
new preferences within the app
You can still set up schedules like you did before. The intensity levels have changed from numbers to options of subtle, medium and strong.

I preferred the numbers because it felt like more control over the scents. Another change is you can also do a quick run of the fragrance (if you are entertaining and expecting guests), from 15 minutes to 12 hours.

Pura Car
You can now have the scent fragrances you enjoy at home right in your car! I don’t know about you, but getting into a car that smells good is such a treat. That’s why everyone loves that new car smell, am I right?

The Pura Car plugs into your power outlet and it comes with a USB cord. The scents are different, they are not vials but round discs. The scents last about 30 days. One of the coolest things about it is that the Pura car detects motion, and will run based on how much you are driving. It will start flowing when you are driving, and stop when you are stopped. All hands-free. You can control the intensity of the scents within the app.

Original Pura Diffuser Review
This is my original review from when they started, and it still makes sense to read this.
What is Pura?
Pura is the

Pura comes with a one-year warranty.
How does it work?
Pura works by an electric outlet – it has to be plugged in to work. According to their website:
The Pura diffuser uses low heat diffusion and our own proprietary solvent to disperse ultra-tiny droplets of fragrance into the air.
trypura.com
It’s entirely customizable. Want it to dispense scent all day? It can do that. Want it to turn on when you get home from work? It can do that as well. Do you have a house of picky noses and need only a light scent? You can control the intensity between 1-10 (with 10 being very high). Want to switch to the other scent? You can do that with a quick tap.

The app will also keep track of how long each bottle has been running. It has a handy “Away Mode” within the app. This syncs the device with your location, so if it sees that you are away from your house, it will automatically stop running. Once you return, it will start again.

The Pura diffuser is stated to cover 1000 square feet, which is about the size of our downstairs area. Within the app, you can name your different devices by location if you have more than one. This way – you can keep track of them all.
How long do Pura Scents Last?
Pura states that one fragrance vial will last a total of 2 weeks at a medium intensity of 5, running 8 hours/day. So, if you run one scent on this schedule for two weeks, you can switch to the other scent for the last two weeks of the month. (new update above about Puralast™).

Want your scent to last longer? Lower the intensity. Or shorten the schedule. It’s as easy as that. The Pura Fragrance vials have a long shelf life. You can store your unused or leftover scent vials for later use. Just pop the cap on it and keep it for another time.
Is it safe for families and pets?
According to Pura, their fragrances are pet and kid-friendly, paraben/phthalate-free, and cruelty-free. There is no acetaldehyde, dichlorobenzene, ethyl hexanol, formaldehyde, GMOs, methyl pyrrolidone, parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, styrene, or animal testing with their fragrances.

They only source their fragrances from reputable companies, that have committed to sourcing their fragrances responsibly. You’ll see fragrance collaborations with companies like Nest, Sunday Riley, Thymes, LAFCO, Anthropologie, and even Disney! It’s a revolutionary product and I think we’ll be seeing a lot more collaborations in the future.
How to know what Fragrance to buy?
I’ll be honest, the sheer amount of amazing fragrances offered will make you go bananas. Luckily, choosing a scent is not hard with Pura’s Fragrance Quiz. I’m more of an Amber scent lover.

You can also choose from a list of best sellers, or choose from a category of scent types that already appeals to you; such as Citrus, Woodsy, Floral, Fresh, etc. Or, go with a seasonal fragrance for the holidays!
Where to Buy the Pura Device and Fragrances?
You will find the most selection on their website; trypura.com. However, Pura and Pura’s fragrances are also sold through various retailers such as Walmart, Sephora, Amazon, Ulta, Anthropologie, Nordstrom, and the Container Store.
Pura offers a subscription package where you can get 30% off, a lifetime warranty on your device, and earn reward points with each purchase.

Pros & Cons

- Includes a handy nightlight.
- Doesn’t look as tacky as other plug-in devices.
- makes a great gift!
→Cons
- More expensive than other fragrance devices.
- Has to be controlled via an app, which could be annoying to some.
- Scents might not last as long as some would like.
- Can’t customize your scents (as you would with an essential oil diffuser), but you can get pretty close by choosing the right fragrances.
- Not available yet in many in-person stores, but available online at many retailers (including Amazon, target, and Walmart).
Final Verdict
Would I recommend this to you? Wholeheartedly yes!
I love my Pura, even with a picky nose family! The scent offerings are second to none, and it’s fun to pick out scents for the seasons. I find that since my family is sensitive, I have to choose very subtle scents and run them now and again (instead of consistently on a schedule.) I can’t tell you how many people come into our house and say how good it smells.
